Location

Green Bay – Appleton, Wisconsin area (primary work will be in southeastern Wisconsin).

Pay

$34–$39 per hour, depending on experience.

Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced directional drill locator to join our underground fiber installation team. In this role, you’ll work closely with drill operators to guide horizontal directional drilling (HDD) operations, ensuring bore paths are accurate and safe. You’ll use locating equipment to monitor the drill head, identify underground utilities and obstacles, and assist with installation tasks when not locating. A CDL (Class A/B) is preferred due to the need to operate or move company vehicles and equipment.

Key Responsibilities

Provide HDD drill head location services, guiding the operator around existing utilities and obstacles for fiber‑installation projects .

  • Set up and calibrate directional drilling equipment, including locating devices and survey tools .
  • Perform pre‑drilling surveys to determine appropriate bore paths and help identify potential hazards .
  • Communicate bore progress and safety performance to the site supervisor and collaborate with drill operators and crew members .
  • When not locating, assist with installing conduit, vaults and fiber cable, and help the crew meet production goals .
  • Conduct regular inspections and maintenance of locating equipment and report any issues to your supervisor .
  • Maintain accurate records of drilling activities, equipment usage and project progress, and adhere to all safety guidelines and environmental protocols .
  • Travel to job sites within southeast Wisconsin and work outdoors in varying weather conditions as needed.

Required Qualifications

  • Proven experience locating for horizontal directional drilling projects—typically 1–2 years or more .
  • In‑depth knowledge of directional drilling techniques, locating equipment and utility‑locating methods .
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and project plans and collaborate with project managers and engineers .
  • Strong understanding of safety protocols and environmental considerations related to drilling operations .
  • Physically fit with the ability to lift up to 50–80 lbs. and work outdoors in various weather conditions .
  • Valid driver’s license with clean driving record; CDL (Class A/B) is preferred and may be required depending on equipment/vehicle assignments .
  • Willingness to travel locally, work overtime and respond to night or weekend call‑outs as needed .
  • Successful completion of pre‑employment drug/alcohol screening and background check .

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in telecommunications or fiber‑optic construction.
  • Experience with survey tools, guidance systems and tracking technologies.
  • Additional safety certifications (OSHA, CPR, etc.).

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $34.00 – $39.00 per hour

Expected hours: 40 – 55 per week
